In just a few short years the protective decree was forgotten; persecution of the Jews began again in By , the Jewish community had been completely destroyed, with many Jews forcibly converted to Christianity. These forced converts retained Jewish practice in private, but they publicly boiled pork lard in large pots, as a way to appear non-Jewish. Hence these Jews were nicknamed Chuetas — “pork lard. Epic narrative allowed poets like Homer no opportunity for personal revelations. However, Hesiod’s extant work comprises several didactic poems in which he went out of his way to let his audience in on a few details of his life. There are three explicit references in Works and Days , as well as some passages in his Theogony that support inferences made by scholars.
The former poem says that his father came from Cyme in Aeolis on the coast of Asia Minor , a little south of the island Lesbos and crossed the sea to settle at a hamlet, near Thespiae in Boeotia , named Ascra , “a cursed place, cruel in winter, hard in summer, never pleasant” Works Hesiod’s patrimony there, a small piece of ground at the foot of Mount Helicon , occasioned lawsuits with his brother Perses , who seems, at first, to have cheated him of his rightful share thanks to corrupt authorities or “kings” but later became impoverished and ended up scrounging from the thrifty poet Works 35, Unlike his father, Hesiod was averse to sea travel, but he once crossed the narrow strait between the Greek mainland and Euboea to participate in funeral celebrations for one Athamas of Chalcis , and there won a tripod in a singing competition.
Fanciful though the story might seem, the account has led ancient and modern scholars to infer that he was not a professionally trained rhapsode , or he would have been presented with a lyre instead. The poet is presented with a lyre , in contradiction to the account given by Hesiod himself in which the gift was a laurel staff.

Interpreting the Historical Buddha a. Dates There is no complete agreement among scholars and Buddhist traditions regarding the dates of the historical Buddha. But have you ever thought about when or how gambling first originating? The fact is that some forms of gambling have existed in virtually the same form for thousands of years. Who would think that the origin of poker goes back to the Minoan civilization, more than 3, years ago? Nowadays, we consider that throwing a double six in a dice game is lucky and this too has its ancient origins. From references in Homer and other ancient texts we can find out that gambling games have been used widely in ancient Greece.
Special places even existed where people passionate about gambling would go to play. However, like the casinos of today, those places carried a bad reputation and it was considered shameful for someone to go there.
Mark published on 28 March The Silk Road was a network of trade routes, formally established during the Han Dynasty of China , which linked the regions of the ancient world in commerce. The network was used regularly from BCE, when the Han officially opened trade with the west, to CE, when the Ottoman Empire boycotted trade with the west and closed the routes.
The Persian Royal Road ran from Susa , in north Persia modern day Iran to the Mediterranean Sea in Asia Minor modern day Turkey and featured postal stations along the route with fresh horses for envoys to quickly deliver messages throughout the empire.

The religious basis of calendars around the world: There are many religious calendars in existence, but each is normally in use in one region of the world — typically by followers of a single religion. Almost all of the world’s religious calendars are based on religion, astrology, or myth: The Baha’i calendar is based on the date that the Bab declared that a new manifestation of God would appear.
The Creativity Movement , a racist, sexist and homophobic religious group, bases their calendar on the date when their religious book was published. The Hindu calendar is based on a planetary alignment in BCE. The Jewish calendar is based on their belief in the date of creation. The Mayan calendar was based on the day that they believed that Venus was born. The Muslim calendar is based on year of the hegira — the flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.
Architecture of Ancient Rome Roman architecture, even more than the rest of Roman art , reflected the practical character, restless energy and organizational mindset of its creators. As the Roman Empire expanded to engulf not only the Mediterranean region but also large areas of Western Europe, Roman architects struggled to achieve two overriding aims: To this end, they mastered a number of important architectural techniques, including the arch, the dome and the vault, as well as the use of concrete.
In the aesthetic scales the contribution of mighty Rome weighs more lightly than that of tiny states such as Sumeria and Siena.
The history of checkers can be traced to the very cradle of civilization, where vestiges of the earliest form of the game was unearthed in an archeological dig in the ancient city of Ur in southern Mesopotamia, which is now modern day Iraq. Using a slightly different board, no one is sure of the exact rules of the game which was carbon dated at B. A similar game using a 5×5 board, called Alquerque is known to have existed in ancient Egypt as far back as B. This Egyptian version was so popular that man played it for thousands of years.
Then, in the year A. This modified game was then called “Fierges” or “Ferses,” but it was more appropriately called as “Le Jeu Plaisant De Dames,” because it was considered a women’s social game. Later, the game was made more challenging by making jumps mandatory and so, this newer version was referred to as “Jeu Force. Now, with its own written rules, the game settled in England where it was known as “Draughts” and in America where it was called “Checkers.
Later, game enthusiasts noticed that certain openings gave advantage to one side. And so, to begin the game in a random manner, two move restrictions were developed for expert players.

Anno Domini The year numbering system used with Common Era notation was devised by the Christian monk Dionysius Exiguus in the year to replace the Era of Martyrs system, because he did not wish to continue the memory of a tyrant who persecuted Christians. Bede also introduced the practice of dating years before what he supposed was the year of birth of Jesus, and the practice of not using a year zero. The term “Common Era” is traced back in English to its appearance as “Vulgar Era” [e] to distinguish dates on the Ecclesiastic calendar from those of the regnal year , the year of reign of a sovereign, typically used in national law.
The first use of the Latin term vulgaris aerae [f] discovered so far was in a book by Johannes Kepler. Thus, “the common era of the Jews”, “the common era of the Mahometans”, “common era of the world”, “the common era of the foundation of Rome”. Furthermore, several style guides now prefer or mandate its usage. Others have taken a different approach.
People of all faiths have taken to using it simply as a matter of convenience.
Even a quick and cursory glance at its inventory of signs makes it very apparent of this script’s Egyptian origin. Originally it was thought that at round BCE, Sinai was conquered by Egypt, and the local West-Semitic population were influenced by Egyptian culture and adopted a small number of hieroglyphic signs about 30 to write their own language. However, recent discoveries in Egypt itself have compounded this scenario.
Inscriptions dating to BCE written in what appears to be Proto-Sinaitic were found in Upper Egypt, and nearby Egyptian texts speak of the presence of Semitic-speaking people living in Egypt. No matter where and when the adoption of Egyptian signs onto a Semitic language occurred, the process of adoption is quite interesting.
However, Hesiod’s extant work comprises several didactic poems in which he went out of his way to let his audience in on a few details of his life.
It’s very strange that going across the arbitrary division line between two years also requires a change in the language of abbreviation. Also, traditional convention says that BC comes after a date e. While that convention is no longer universally maintained, it’s odd and confusing. They’re prone to misinterpretation. In particular, the language inconsistency noted above has given birth to a widely-held misconception that AD is an English abbreviation for after death i.
Obviously this is wrong, but it was actually the first explanation I heard as a child, which then caused great confusion when I encountered a teacher telling me that it meant something else in some obscure dead language. I’m not alone in having heard this false etymology, as many internet discussions will attest. As noted in a previous answer, the birth of Jesus Christ is now estimated by most scholars to have occurred at least a few years earlier.
I’ve seen everything from 7 to 2 BCE — and yes, in this particular sentence, using the abbreviation BC seems to me an oxymoron. In any case, “common era” solves this problem by just admitting that we’re using a common convention, which even Christian scholars now widely regard as inaccurate. But it’s still a convenient and “common” way of referring to our “era” of year reckoning. Insisting that we hold onto the older style too seems to be promoting ignorance of the fact that the abbreviations are literally false.
One item of confusion occurs because of the erroneous after death etymology above.

The protons, neutrons, and electrons that will eventually compose Transformers are formed, ruining it forever. God creates the universe in six literal days. The universe comes into existence. The AllSpark Almanac The exact date of this universal stream ‘s creation is somewhat muddled, as seen in the three different dates seen above.
The account dating it to BCE is the one used in early recorded human history, but was later retconned within scientific literature, which established the much earlier date above. More recently, Transformers Animated: As Hasbro-sanctioned material, this account is assumed to take precedence in canon , at least with regard to the Transformers brand ; however, it is unclear whether the event represents God’s six-day creation, the Big Bang, or another, as-yet-unrevealed origin.
