Had early scan. Heartbeat seen but a week smaller than expected.

Hi all- I just returned from my first ultrasound, where the doctor told me that the fetus was measuring only 5 weeks–but according to the date of my LMP, I should be early in my 7th week right now! The scan was done at a radiologist’s office where they have highly sensitive machines; my OB ordered the scan because I had had some light spotting in weeks past. I see the OB for my first prenatal exam tomorrow, and hope she’ll offer some insight the radiologist wouldn’t say anything to me, just that my OB would let me know. I just want to know if anyone has had a similar experience, and if the outcome was positive?? The baby only measured 8 weeks, but had a good hb ect. I’m 14 weeks 1 day now and everything is still going good. So like me you either ovulated late or ovulated twice. I’m sure everything is ok. I thought I was 6w 5d but baby measured 5w5d. I went back 2 weeks later, baby had a wonderful heartbeat but was still measuring 1 week behind.

First ultrasound at 8 weeks, fetus too small?

As pregnancy progresses, average-sized women may be able to use abdominal ultrasounds earlier than larger women, but within a few weeks even the largest woman is able to have an abdominal ultrasound.

A fully updated and expanded version is published in Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: When I was pregnant with my first baby in , I decided against having a scan. What influenced me the most was my feeling that I would lose something important as a mother if I allowed someone to test my baby. I knew that if a minor or uncertain problem showed up — and this is not uncommon — that I would be obliged to return again and again, and that after a while, it would feel as if my baby belonged to the system, and not to me.

In the years since then I have had three more unscanned babies, and have read many articles and research papers about ultrasound. Nothing I have read has made me reconsider my decision. Ultrasound Past and Present Ultrasound was developed during WWII to detect enemy submarines, and was subsequently used in the steel industry. In July Glasgow surgeon Ian Donald borrowed an industrial machine and, using beefsteaks as controls, began to experiment with abdominal tumours that he had removed from his patients.

Here in Australia, it is estimated that 99 percent of babies are scanned at least once in pregnancy — mostly as a routine prenatal ultrasound RPU at 4 to 5 months.

He did an ultrasound and I was only measuring 7 weeks. I had questions when I left that first appointment too, and I was hoping for a miracle. Unfortunately for me, I ended up having a missed miscarriage. There is hope that, like hmommie said, you may have ovulated later than expected. I would suggest having another ultrasound days later to see if the fetus had grown. If you lose the baby, please don’t give up hope, it is usually a one time thing, and you can try again a couple months later.

That is what we are doing. Best of luck to you!! I have to go back for another Ultrasound in 2 weeks to see if there is any fetal growth. Could be totally fine- just off bc of late ovulation or implantation or could be a miscarriage.

References “The technology of prenatal diagnosis is usually presented to us as a solution, but it brings with it problems of its own If you’ve already read it, you may want to skip ahead. All pregnant women in our technology-happy modern society face confusing choices about prenatal testing, its advantages and disadvantages, and its appropriateness for them. Large pregnant women face even more confusion, since prenatal testing can be slightly harder in this population, and the results can be more confusing.

Please note that even if you are at a somewhat increased risk for problems, that does not mean that there will be problems.

Wishing you luck, and please dont worry designerbaby Wed Jul FWIW I had a 12 week scan which put my dates a full 2 weeks behind what I’d thought, and what the first sonographer had told me only 3 days before. Which tells me that either a my ovulation occurred at a different time to what I thought or b the sonographers are fallible. I think possibly it’s a combination of the two I’ll probably never know It’s so early to tell I guess you have to just take it a day at a time and believe your little one’s a fighter.

First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby.

Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby. Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel. The gel helps improve contact between the probe and your skin.
